Lifting Equipment for Workshops and Maintenance

Workshops and maintenance teams need lifting gear that is portable, simple and dependable. A chain pulley block hung from a beam or gantry lifts an engine out of a truck, a motor off its base or a gearbox onto the bench. Add a push-pull or geared trolley and the load can be moved along the beam once it is lifted.

Workshops & Maintenance

Maintenance jobs often happen in tight spaces. A ratchet lever hoist works at any angle, so it can pull a shaft, tension a chain or hold a part while bolts go in. When a machine has to be shifted, skid rollers and a cable puller move it without a crane. Common jobs and the right equipment

Removing engines and gearboxes

A chain pulley block on a push-pull trolley lifts the unit out of the vehicle and rolls it clear.

Overhauling motors and pumps

A chain pulley block on a geared trolley lifts motors and pumps off their bases and places them on the bench.

Pulling and holding in tight spaces

A ratchet lever hoist pulls shafts, tensions chains and holds parts at any angle.

Shifting machines

Skid rollers carry the machine and a cable puller moves it to its new position.

Slinging awkward parts

Webbing slings wrap around odd-shaped parts without scratching machined surfaces.

Safety on the job

  • Hang the hoist only from a beam, gantry or lifting point rated for the load plus the hoist's own weight.
  • Check the hook safety latch, load chain and hooks for wear or stretch before each use.
  • Never work under a load held only by a hoist. Lower it onto stands or blocks first.
  • Operate a lever hoist with its own handle only. Do not add a pipe extension for extra leverage.

Questions people ask

What capacity chain block do I need for a workshop?

Pick one rated above the heaviest part you lift, such as the largest engine or motor you handle. Tell us the heaviest load and the beam height and we will suggest the capacity and lift.

Ratchet lever hoist or chain pulley block?

Use a chain pulley block for straight vertical lifts from overhead. Use a ratchet lever hoist for pulling, tensioning or lifting at an angle, and where there is little headroom.

How do I move a lathe without a crane?

Lift one end slightly with a jack, slide skid rollers under the base, and pull the machine with a cable puller anchored to a fixed point. Move slowly and keep people clear of the pulling line.
